It is not with the lyre of someone in love that I go seducing people. The rattle of the leper is what sings in my hands. Jane Kenyon

P R A I S I N G

(Photo Montage, Title "Poetry, The High Praise")

On The Fourth Day...........

PRAISING

"Say, poet, what it is you do.-I praise.
How can you look into the monster's gaze
And accept what has death in it?- I Praise.
But, poet, the annonymous and those
With no name, how do you call on them? - I praise.
What right have you though, in each changed disguise,
In each new mask, to trust your truth? - I praise.
Both calm and violent things know you for theirs,
Both star and storm: How so? Because I praise."
Rainer Maria Rilke, translated by Clive Wilmer

I can write His-tory like a news
reporter. In fascimile language, where pronouns
are always black and white, where adjectives
are straitjacketed in columns, where predicates
conspire with full stops to end
sentences.

Here is a newspaper report:
"Charismatic evangelist attracts stadium
crowds. Street Magician performs signs
and wonders. Usurper to the throne killed
in mediaeval ritual."

Now let me translate that:
"When He preaches, fishes are caught
on the lines of His Words, When He multiplies
fishes, wordlessness preach, His silence
is not a line weighed down
by hook and sinker but a rope
afloat with a life buoy."

"He walks the second mile
on the waters of our disbelief.
He moves mountains in the lever
of a mustard seed."

"He is a hare in a round
world who runs ahead of us
to show the Way and then runs on
so fast that He comes alongside
us, a constant Companion to tortoises."

"In the end which is also
the beginning, He becomes a scare-
crow to frighten away the birds
who steal seeds from ploughed
hearts."

Yes, I could use prose to tell you
all about God, but poetry takes you,
honoured guest, to the throne room
to celebrate the coronation of your
King! You may not understand the words
of the anthems but your feet will pirouette
to a cadenza that comes from verse
plucking the chords of your heart.

I dance
when prose
is translated
to high
praise! Posted by Picasa

What does poetry do, what purpose does it serve?I remember the comic strip where Charlie asked Lucy'"Well, Lucy your cartoon didn't improve the world after all, did it? the sun went down last night, and the sun came up again this morning...It's still the same old world..." Lucy was silent for a minute, looked up to the sky and then proclaimed, "THE SKY IS BLUER!"Well, what do you artists, poets, photographers, dancers, actors, musicians, potters (all involed in some form of art) THINK, what is the purpose of your art...what, by the way, is the purpose of your blog, is blogging also not another art form???Bless you...Agape in the Highiest! Have a art-filled weekend!

Lovley Dr. Ng. This is a lovely poem and I can identify forms in your image...it is lovely...
Poetry does make a difference for the self, if not for the world, I for feel so....

Thanks amalendu & Angeldust...I am reminded of what Chad Walsh said,"Why do men indulge in aesthetic activities, painting pictures, writing poetry, composing music, designing gardens? Still more, why does mankind consume the products of aesthetic creation? it is a kind of miracle when a poet writes, but a greater miracle when some pauses to read it." amalendu, Angeldust, you are my miracles.......

In fact we are but human copy machines for His art!! Very good!!

Thanks, Pat..Chad Walsh added," A child releasing a helium balloon into the sky, Jesus Christ ascending into heaven, Shakespeare composing the final scene of King Lear-these may be the echoes and rememberances of that primal impulse of a God who had no necessity to do anything, but decided to play at creating a universe in which beings in his own likeness could play their games too." Now isn't that food for thought!!!Could that be what ART is all about???

How do you make these paintings? They are amazingly beautiful! The colours in particular have heavenly radiance & some consistent distinction...
And your poetry... simply wow!

This question somehow has me struck (& stuck): What is art? ...I have thoughts and half-thoughts pouring in my mind… but not one that I give words to; that make sense! -Anyhow, I'm reminded of something, perhaps it's what Shakespeare said, "What a piece of art is man!" ... thanks to your food for thought! :)

I think art is a means of self-exploration.
I feel when an artist begins on an idea that is initiated in him; he does not know what he will accomplish; till he is finished with his art… because he is “always more beyond”… and I also think… that at times, someone’s poetry can open more truths to a reader than to the writer himself…

Thanks, Merryweather for your comments, it is people like you who are making my comments section even more interesting than the original posting...I really appreciate the trouble you take when posting comments, I agree with you entirely, especially the last two lines of the comments just above this.....Poetry is a Trilogy, it begins with an Idea, there is then that Incarnation (Expression) on paper, and finally the Residence...it takes up residence in the reader. The work of a poem is not complete until at least one other person receives it, reads it and responds to it, the poem is now recreated with power in the mind of the reader. The poem resides in him, increases him, enlarges him, transforms him!

It is undeniable that for some of us the aesthetic component in our lives is like air - without it we wilt...

I do wonder if the world does suffer from the same malaise and is unaware of the utter starvation?

Here in Canada - generally speaking - "beautifying” expenditures are considered extravagant... so our souls are deprived - unlike in Europe or other culture rich continents.

A truly great poem! I really love the energy coming from the photo-montage!

And, of course, the last lines:
‘I dance /when prose / is translated / to high praise!’

Remind me of a story from the life of a Hassidic master who lived in utter poverty. A friend paid him a visit. The master was embarrassed for he had nothing to offer to his dear guest. 'What can I give you, my friend, there's nothing I can give you!?' he kept repeating for a while. His eyes searched desperately around for something. Then they suddenly brightened! I know what I'll give you my friend! I will dance for you!

This offering reminds me of Ephesians 2:10 - "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." The literal translation from the Greek here for "workmanship" is "poem" or "idea". Now how sweet a thought to think that God is writing His verse through us and on us, and that we are, in fact, His sonnets?

Lovely poem of yours, Dr. Ng. In fact, currently my favourite.

Aurora, I am glad the comments section is not just for bloggers to praise each other but also to share our minds and our hearts...I am also pleasantly surprised ( should I be, though?) by your knowledge of the Scriptures....can I just add to that...The greek word "poeima" meaning "creation" or "artwork" is encountered in two places in the New Testament. In Romans 1:20, it refers to His handiwork in all of creation and it is this created universe that reveals clearly God's personage, "His invisible attributes are clearly seen being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead." In Ephesians 2:10 which Aurora referred to, the "Poeima" refers to the people of God. We are His Poeima. And we are to reveal God in and through our creations, our artwork, our poetry, our dances, our music, our paintings, our living....Aurora, you are a POEIMA of the most EXCELLENT kind, blessings unnumbered by yours always and more beyond!!!!!

Borut, thanks, how right you are, I cant dance for you (over-weight and two left foot and no sense of rhythm, etc) but may I offer you, my honoured guest, the fare of this humble poem, "Praising" in praise of the art-work you do on your blog! Remember, blogs are work of art, certainly yours is!!!!

Dr. Ng, thank you for your kind words. I am a Christian, and am thankful for parents who taught me the Word at an early age. I continue to read and study the Bible daily. It is my very favourite book in the world, and the source of all my successes, whatever they may be.
